Fire Hazard Triggers Closures of Some Richmond Trails

30 July 2010

The City of Richmond has closed trails in Richmond Nature Park and along Shell Road until further notice due to the extreme fire hazard created by dry conditions.

Signs and barricades have been posted on the Richmond Nature Park east and west trails and all along the Shell Road Trail.

In addition, No Smoking signs have been posted in a number of City parks and trails that are at high risk. These include: Terra Nova Park, Garden City Park, Bath Slough Trails, Horseshoe Way Trails, Agassiz Park, Paulik Park and McDonald Beach.

The City and Richmond Fire Rescue are also urging all residents to be vigilant in practising fire safety during the continued hot and dry summer weather:
  • Dispose of cigarettes and matches in an ashtray—do not toss lit items out a car window or off a balcony.
  • Operate propane barbecues a safe distance from flammable materials.
  • Clean all areas around your home of combustible materials.
  • Keep areas around shrubs and hedges moist to the touch.
The ban on outdoor burning remains in place. No open fires and no charcoal barbecues are permitted, including in all beach areas and parks.

If you see a brush fire, please report it immediately by calling 911. For more information on the closures, please call the parks department at 604-244-1208.
