Richmond Presents Puget Sound Art and Transit Expert

18 March 2010

Like Richmond, Seattle has a new light rail transit line running from the downtown core to its international airport. So what will passengers experience aside from an efficient, environmentally-sound ride? Find out on Thursday, March 25 at 7 p.m. at Richmond City Hall, when public art guru, Barbara Luecke, presents the first of three talks in the 2010 Lulu Series: Art in the City.

Barbara Luecke’s STart on Link presentation gives insight on how the wide-ranging work by some 30 artists was brought to the transit line – an overview of the newly unveiled artworks, along with some insights into how and why the projects were commissioned will be discussed.

Luecke has collaborated with artists for more than 20 years. To create place-making artwork for the public to embrace and also debate, involves many players: architects, engineers, managers, civic leaders, business owners, community members and of course, artists. By producing and directing numerous projects, Luecke brings art experiences to the public realm through permanent and temporary installations and through community celebrations. She was a long-time staff member of the pioneering 4Culture in Seattle prior to her current post of managing the art program for Sound Transit, the agency bringing regional transit to the central Puget Sound area.

This talk will be preceded by a short performance by storyteller, musician and novelist Brendan McLeod who is also a former Canadian and Vancouver SLAM poetry champion. His music group, The Fugitives, was nominated for a 2008 Canadian Folk Music Award and his first novel, The Convictions of Leonard McKinley was long listed for the 2008 RE:Lit Award, Canada’s top prize for independent presses.

Barbara Luecke’s talk is the first of three events in the 2010 Lulu Series. Artists Dennis Oppenheim and Hema Upadhyay will appear on April 15 and May 20 respectively. More at ww.richmond.ca/luluseries.

All Lulu events are free and run 7:00-9:30 p.m. at Richmond City Hall, located at 6911 No. 3 Road. Seating is limited; please RSVP at lulu@richmond.ca.
