Steveston Offers Ample Ways to Paint the Village Red
18 February 2010Steveston Village is welcoming the world to experience its allure during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Savour dishes of fresh seafood and locally grown ingredients, be captivated by logger’s axe throwing and log rolling shows; welcome the world’s largest flying tanker in a fly by fire fighting demonstration, explore historic heritage treasures or stroll the artisan’s market. This is just the beginning of things to enjoy in Steveston Village.
“Richmond Revealed allows us to show our pride as Canadians, as well as proudly showcase our distinct heritage, culture and industry in Richmond,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “Steveston is one of the unique parts of Richmond and we’re pleased to join with our community partners in celebrating its diverse character with our visitors from around the world.”
A month-long series of events and spectacles include:
- February 19 at 6:30 p.m. enjoy the unique jazz music of Gabriel Mark Hasselbach in the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, a National Historic Site of Canada.
- From February 20 to 24 stroll the popular Steveston Artisans market.
- February 23 and 24 enjoy a rare opportunity to see one of the world’s two remaining Martin Mars water bombers conduct fly by water scoop and drop demonstrations at Garry Point Park.
- February 21 to 23 at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The Great Canadian Logger show will take place in Fisherman’s Park in front of the Cannery. Thrill to the action as battling camps compete in log rolling, axe throwing and more.
- Throughout the month savour the bounty of BC farms and fisheries as Steveston restaurant serve up dishes showcasing local ingredients.
- Retail stores are open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week.
- Historical sites are open seven days a week in February.

Other Richmond Revealed spectacles promoting Richmond’s leading industries include the colossal Canadian Olympic Committee logo created with 13 million cranberries and the ferries wheel to get a birds eye view at Brighouse Park; an impressive six story inukshuk made with transportation containers on the corner of Elmbridge Way and Gilbert; and the impressive aerospace and high technology exhibit at City Hall featuring a room sized model of the Canadarm.
