Olympic Encore Public Skate at Richmond Olympic Oval
23 March 2010The Richmond Olympic Oval is offering the public a chance relive the Olympic excitement and skate on the very ice where medals were won and Olympic records were set. Come out to the Richmond Olympic Oval located at 6111 River Road for this special opportunity to skate a lap on the track between 1 and 5 p.m. on April 3, 4 or 5.
The 400 metre track at the Richmond Olympic Oval will be removed after this community event as the Oval transforms into its legacy format – an international centre of excellence for sports, health, and wellness.
DJ music, a food concession and other off-ice entertainment will make for a fun afternoon. Admission is $2, kids five and under are free. There is limited parking in the Oval parkade for $2, Oval members can park for free. Public transportation is encouraged.
Skates and helmets are available for rent – $3 for skates and $2 for a helmet. Extremely limited numbers of skates and helmets are available so please bring your own to avoid the long line-ups that are expected. All youth aged 12 and under must wear a CSA-approved multi-impact hockey helmet.
April 1 is the Richmond Olympic Oval’s first day open after the 2010 Vancouver Organization Committee hands the building back to Richmond. It will open to the public seven days weeks and at first will offer fitness classes, public tours and meeting space. The Oval team will work vigorously to introduce further programming over the next few months, transforming the three-levels, and over 47,500 square metres of space into its legacy model.
The Oval’s flexible design will allow it to be used for a wide variety of different sport and community uses. It will offer a complete range of sport, sports medicine and wellness services – a 23,000-square-foot fitness centre, two ice sheets, a track, hardwood an rubber courts, ample studio space for group fitness, yoga, cycling, rowing classes in its state-of-the-art indoor paddling tank and more. The programming has been carefully planned to ensure a full range of training and competitive opportunities for both summer and winter sports, ranging from developmental and recreational to elite level sport.
