Lulu Awards to Honour Urban Design Excellence in Richmond
29 September 2010Have you ever wondered what it is about a particular city location that makes you feel it is attractive, memorable and safe? You can likely thank excellence in urban design.
This is why the City of Richmond is proud to announce the call for submissions to its second Lulu Awards – a bi‑annual urban design awards program. Submission are being accepted until November 15, 2010.
“The Lulu Awards are intended to recognize, celebrate and inspire excellence in architecture, urban design and landscape architecture in Richmond,” says Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “The five awards given in 2009 not only showcase the quality of urban design in projects ranging from residential to commercial to public space, the award winners also raise the bar of the level of urban design, thus the liveability of our city.”
The independent judging panel will return from 2009, and includes internationally renowned, award-winning architect James Cheng; former president of the Canadian Institute of Planners and well-known urban planner Jay Wollenberg; and acclaimed landscape architect and visionary Don Vaughan.
“Good design in an urban setting means crafting buildings that respect and enhance their context, creating environments with a strong sense of place, making an attractive and functional public realm,” said Jay Wollenberg. “It is fine to celebrate good individual buildings, but I think it is great Richmond wants to celebrate urban design excellence and recognize projects that make an outstanding contribution to the character, livability, and attractiveness of the community.”
The deadline for submissions is November 15, 2010. The judges will make their decisions in early 2011 and the awards reception will be held in March 2011.
