Terra Nova Park Recognized for Environmental Excellence
13 October 2009Terra Nova Rural Park in Richmond has long been a community jewel. At its convention in September, the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) recognized the unique features of this rural park by presenting the City of Richmond with an award for Leadership & Innovation in Environmental Excellence.
“Terra Nova Rural Park is a gathering place for our community, whether it be taking a walk along the dike, volunteering at the Richmond Fruit Tree Sharing Farm or enjoying some quiet time in nature,” explains Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “We are honoured the UBCM has identified Terra Nova as the most innovative park in British Columbia.”
The vision for Terra Nova Rural Park is “to preserve the unique rural character while providing a balance between agricultural heritage, wildlife conservation and recreational uses.” Key to the park’s success is the ongoing recognition of its unique eco-system, the preservation of heritage assets and the support of community partners such as the Richmond Fruit Tree Sharing Farm Project and the Terra Nova Schoolyard Society.
The UBCM Community Excellence Awards program is an opportunity to showcase municipalities and regional districts who ‘lead the pack,’ take risks to innovate, establish new partnerships, question established ways of doing business and pioneer new customer service practices. The Leadership & Innovation category recognizes demonstrated environmental excellence in successfully implementing programs, policies and plans that have significantly benefited a BC community.
