Wednesday Sports Nights to Inspire Youth at the Richmond Olympic Oval

May 11, 2009

Complimentary admission to youth age 6-15; high performance summer camp leaders to teach skills, instill Olympic ideals

Between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. every Wednesday, beginning May 13 until June 24, 2009, youth aged 6-15 will receive complimentary drop-in entry to the Richmond Olympic Oval and are invited to experience a wide range of sports activities.

“Olympic fever and the ideals of the Olympics do not start one week before the Games, nor do they end on its last day,” says Kristian Frantzen, Summer Sport Camp Coordinator. “It starts the moment kids are taught to play sports with a spirit friendship, solidarity and fair play. These ideals will give the youth of Metro Vancouver the tools to be successful both on and off the field for many years to come.”

All sports activities will be lead by the Oval’s high-performance Summer Sports Camp leaders, focused on instilling the Olympic spirit - friendship, solidarity and fair play – along with sport-specific skills.

Richmond youth will have the chance to meet McMath graduate and UBC Thunderbird basketball star Kyle Watson, also an Oval Kids Summer Sports Camp leader. Kyle will teach and play with all the participants, as well as share inspiring stories about how a Richmond kid achieved his dreams.

Parents of participants will also receive complimentary drop-in entry during Wednesday Night Sports Nights and are invited to test drive the Oval’s Fitness Mezzanine for a workout. Children aged 9 and under must remain under the supervision of a parent or adult guardian.

“This is an excellent opportunity for busy parents to get active, while their children are learning new skills out on the courts,” says Krista Popowych, Manager of Programs and Services. “With childminding available on-site, our state-of-the-art strength and cardiovascular equipment, and experienced personal trainers, the Richmond Olympic Oval is one of the few places where busy parents can still achieve their fitness goals.”
