Richmond Secures New Home for RCMP Detachment

12 November 2009

The City of Richmond has secured a new state-of-the art headquarters for the Richmond RCMP detachment. The building, located at 11411 No. 5 Road, currently houses the 2010 Vancouver Integrated Security Unit (ISU) and will be ready for occupancy by Richmond RCMP in 2012.

“This is an exceptional opportunity for the City,” explains Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “Our RCMP detachment has outgrown its current location and this move provides us with an outstanding facility as well as a cost effective solution to replacing the existing facility. Council recognized a new RCMP building was a key component of the City’s long-term public safety requirements to service the growing needs of our community. The RCMP will continue to have a strong presence in Richmond’s city centre even after the detachment relocates to No. 5 Road.”

At 107,770 square feet, it is large enough to provide for Richmond’s current policing service needs under one roof as well as give room for expansion to accommodate the future public safety requirements of the City's growing population projections to 2031. The land and building were purchased for $20.2 million.

“The decision to purchase this building ensures we will be able to provide top-notch policing services to the community for years to come and public safety will not be compromised,” said Councillor Derek Dang, Chair of Richmond’s Community Safety Committee. “By purchasing this building, the City is able to capitalize on the 2010 Winter Games legacy infrastructure.”

The 2010 Vancouver Integrated Security Unit (ISU) will continue to use the building until August 2010. This facility is built to post-disaster standards and ISU has implemented upgraded features that will benefit Richmond RCMP.

“It is great to know the building and infrastructure that has been an important support to our 2010 security planners will be of future operational use to the Richmond RCMP,” says Assistant Commissioner Bud Mercer, Chief Operating Officer for the V2010 Integrated Security Unit.

"Richmond RCMP detachment has outgrown its current 52,000 square foot location at 6900 Minoru Boulevard," explains Assistant Commissioner Peter German, Lower Mainland District  RCMP Commander. "As a resident of Richmond, this new facility will provide the City and the its RCMP detachment with an excellent platform from which to deliver our many community-focused programs, while also responding to the policing needs of a growing and diverse community."

"We look forward to continuing to provide an enhanced level of service the residents deserve and have come to expect," says Superintendent Rendall Nesset, Officer in Charge of Richmond RCMP.

This purchase falls under the City’s corporate facility implementation plan and community safety building master plan.

Renovations to the new RCMP headquarters will commence after the Integrated Security Unit vacates and it is anticipated Richmond RCMP will move into the facilities in 2012. The current RCMP building, located at Granville Avenue and Minoru Blvd is owned by the City. It will be evaluated and a feasibility study will determine its future.
