Richmond Photographers Proudly Showcase Their City

Picture It Photo Competition Winners Announced

20 August 2009

Nine outstanding photographs have been selected from more than 700 entries as winners of Richmond’s Picture It photo competition, which was launched in June. From appealing to amusing, the photos show the many sides of the city. The winning photos will now be transformed into a new postcard series that will help promote Richmond as a tourism destination and to invite visitors from around the world to come to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

“We live in a beautiful, vibrant and diverse city and the winning entries show why we love it here,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “The 2010 Olympic Winter Games will introduce millions of people to Richmond for the first time and these photos will play an integral part in welcoming the world to our city.”

Richmond is an official Venue City for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, as home to the Richmond Olympic Oval, which will host the speed skating competition for the 2010 Games. Richmond will also be home to the O Zone, an official 2010 Games celebration site, an exciting Olympic-themed festival of entertainment, culture and sports. For more information on the O Zone visit www.richmondozone.ca.

The Picture It photo contest was presented by Tourism Richmond and the City of Richmond. It is one of many programs designed by Tourism Richmond and the City of Richmond to leverage the local and international excitement and interest in the 2010 Olympic Winter Games for immediate and long-term growth in tourist visits to Richmond.

The eight winning photographers and their categories are:

  • Harvey Cheung: Nature
  • Clare Scott: Richmond at Play
  • Larry Nalzaro: Richmond Oval
  • Dave Kemp: Multicultural
  • Michael D. Krochter: Steveston
  • Leah Thom: Art
  • Louise Irving: Business
  • Lloyd Taganahan: Sport

The judges also selected a ninth winning photo in the Heritage category and the winner’s name will be announced in the near future after he has been contacted.

“The judges were overwhelmed with the quantity and quality of the entries,” said Tracy Lakeman, Executive Director, Tourism Richmond. “We were absolutely amazed by the talent level of the photographers who took part in the contest and it was a difficult task to choose the winners.”

The winning photos are being published in the August 20 edition of the Richmond Review and can be viewed at www.allinrichmond.com/picture.

The photos will now be developed into print and electronic postcards. The new postcards will then be made available free of charge to the Richmond community so they can participate in an exciting program to invite their friends and families to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Prizes will include the opportunity for contestants to win a package, including airfare and accommodation, for a trip to Richmond during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and tickets for Olympic Games events. Watch for more details in the near future.
