Meet the Artists of Oval Precinct Public Art Program at Celebration

June 12, 2009

You are invited to meet the artists behind the stunning public art installations around the Richmond Olympic Oval at a special celebration, Sunday, June 21 at the Legacy Plaza, 6111 River Road. The afternoon will feature live jazz music by the trio The Grand Trine, tours of the installations, refreshments and remarks by host Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

Susan A. Point, who designed the concrete buttress runnels on the north exterior of the Oval, Janet Echelman, who created Water Sky Garden on the east exterior of the Oval, and Buster Simpson, who designed Ice Blade at the Hollybridge Canal Bridge, will be feted at the event, which runs from 3 to 5 p.m. The Legacy Plaza is at the southeast corner of the Richmond Olympic Oval. It’s the first time all three artists will be together at the Oval, and they will speak about their pieces and answer questions from public.

The public art component at the Oval precinct represents the largest investment in public art in the City’s history. Grand in scale and compelling in concept, each of the three pieces help tell the story of Richmond’s heritage and connection to the natural environment, as well as celebrate the City’s role in the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Richmond’s Public Art Program, overseen by the Richmond Public Art Commission, now boasts more than 50 public artworks. For more information on the program, check the city’s website:  www.richmond.ca/publicart. For more information on the celebration, please email publicart@richmond.ca or telephone 604-276-4692.
