Now’s the Time to Clear Leaves and Prepare for Severe Winter Weather
22 October 2009Rain and wind are typical weather patterns for autumn, and according to Environment Canada’s long-range forecast, snow could be on the ground within weeks. That means it’s time for Richmond property owners and residents to prepare for severe weather, and lessen the potential of blocked storm water drains and minor flooding.
Fallen leaves and branches can make walking slippery and difficult, hiding grates and debris such as rocks from pedestrians and cyclists. Leaves covering and blocking storm sewer grates can cause rainwater to pool, overflow and possibly create local flooding.
The City is reminding residents to clear their yards, gutters and eaves of fallen leaves and broken branches. But please do not rake leaves onto sidewalks, streets or in ditches. The City does not clear loose leaves and these block storm sewer grates and posing a hazard to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
Properly composted and mulched leaves make a free and effective organic soil nutrient. Chop leaves with a lawnmower to speed up their breakdown and spread over your lawn and flowerbeds, or purchase a backyard compost bin at the City’s Recycling Depot for $25.
If you prefer to gather leaves and trimmings, place them in clear plastic bags or tied bundles (three feet by two feet) and leave curbside for pick up. Or drop it off at either the City’s Recycling Depot (5555 Lynas Lane) or Ecowaste (on Triangle Road). There is no charge to Richmond residents. Visit the city’s website at www.richmond.ca > City Services > Recycling & Garbage for more information.
Commercial landscapers can drop off yard and garden trimmings at the above locations or at Fraser Richmond Soil and Fibre on No. 8 Road at the prevailing rates. Telephone 604-220-2385 for operating hours.
During severe wet and snowy weather, continue monitoring storm sewer grates in your area and clear any minor blockages, using caution as most are located on the edges of streets and active roadways. Severely blocked drains, fallen trees obstructing streets or sidewalks and other concerns should be reported directly to the Public Works 24-hour Dispatch line at 604-270-8721.
Other winter preparations Richmond residents should undertake include getting snow tires installed on your vehicle now and stocking up on snow shovels and biodegradable de-icers for your home’s walk and driveways.
