Lansdowne Road Gets an Extension

31 July 2009

Travelling through Richmond’s City Centre will get easier as Lansdowne Road extends west, creating a direct and critical link between the Richmond Olympic Oval and Lansdowne Station, a stop on the new the Canada Line rapid transit system.

Construction commences on Tuesday, August 4 to extend Lansdowne Road from Gilbert Road to Hollybridge Way. When complete, the extension will be four lanes and will include bicycle lanes, street lighting, sidewalks and landscaping. It should be open for traffic in late fall.

The City received $1.33 million from the federal and provincial governments for the project from the Building Canada Fund, the infrastructure program introduced this year to promote a stronger economy, cleaner environment and better communities while assisting with local and regional infrastructure needs. The total project cost is $2 million, with the City contributing the remaining third of the cost.

The Lansdowne Road extension project is aligned with Richmond's City Centre Area Plan, which is transforming downtown into a transit- and pedestrian-oriented neighbourhood. The increased roadway capacity along with sidewalks and cycling lanes in both directions will decrease congestion and travel delays. It also allows for future transit service along this route. The full length of roadway between Garden City Road and Hollybridge Way will incorporate significant pedestrian and cycling enhancements as it will be a major urban greenway. The increased road network connection and the pedestrian and cycling alternatives all contribute to lower greenhouse gas emissions and help achieve the city’s vision of the most appealing, livable community in Canada.
