Richmond Celebrates Sustainability on Earth Day 2009
17 April 2009The City of Richmond is celebrating Earth Day 2009 by respecting our past and living our future at Terra Nova Rural Park, 2431 Westminster Highway, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 25. Volunteers will work on crabapple ridge, an interpretation of an original ridge noted in 1859 Royal Engineer Survey notes and sketches of Terra Nova.
Planting native species of crabapple trees and gooseberry and salmonberry shrubs on the ridge provides an opportunity to interpret the original landscape as noted in the 1859 survey. The plantings not only pay homage to the past, they also branch into the future. Over time, the plants will grow into hedgerows that will provide protection and a food source for wildlife, especially songbirds.
Volunteers can also clean up Terra Nova Rural Park by picking up litter, building a split rail fence or removing invasive English Ivy, all while listening to live jazz music in the field. For more information on this event, please contact 604-244-1250.
In addition to the Terra Nova event, the City of Richmond is holding many other Earth Day activities which are fun for the whole family.
Everyone is welcome to join in and clean up the Cambie community from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 18. After picking up litter throughout King George Park, cutting invasive plants or working on the Bath Slough Trail, volunteers can celebrate their hard work with refreshments and draw prizes at East Richmond Community Hall, 12360 Cambie Road, until 4 p.m. Call 604-233-8399 to register.
Community members are also encouraged to participate in the Hamilton Earth Day clean up on Saturday, April 18 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A community crew leaving from Bethany Church, 22680 Westminster Highway, will pick up litter in zones throughout Hamilton and enjoy hot chocolate and snacks after their clean up efforts. Come look for treasure at the swap meet or clean up houses and yards by bringing unwanted house hold items, including scrap metal, to the Earth Day bins. These activities are at Hamilton Community Centre, 5140 Smith Drive.
The Richmond School Board will be hosting Eco-Fest, their annual district wide Earth Day event, at McRoberts Secondary School, 8980 Williams Road, on Wednesday, April 22. Celebrating sustainability in schools and the community, Eco-Fest exhibits bring awareness to practical sustainable living, educate elementary and secondary school staff and students about green practices and motivate everyone to make a difference.
Be interactive and visit Aberdeen Centre’s Earth Day display booths, 4151 Hazelbridge Way, from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 25. City of Richmond staff will be on hand to answer questions and provide activity kits and tips on sustainable practices like recycling or natural home and garden care.
Richmond residents are encouraged to walk, bike or carpool to all Earth Day events.
Earth Day 2009 is April 22, however everyone can do their part and take positive action in their homes and communities to be green throughout the year.
