City Council Approves Public Art Project for Richmond Olympic Oval
26 October 2009Richmond City Council has unanimously approved another exciting art concept for the Richmond Olympic Oval Precinct. Portions of the new artwork, entitled Lulu Suite by artists Deanne Achong and Faith Moosang, will be ready for viewing prior to the 2010 Winter Games, with the project scheduled for completion by July 2010.
“We are excited about having this dynamic piece permanently located in Richmond,” says Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “This artwork is commissioned as part of an exciting and ambitious Public Art Program entitled Telling The Stories of Richmond.”
Lulu Suite, the fifth artwork in the Oval Precinct, is a pun on the name of the actress, Lulu Sweet, whom Lulu Island (Richmond) is named for, and represents the compositional suite approach of the artwork. It is a series of immersive audio/visual works using video and mobile interactive technology to engage with the histories of the Oval site and the City of Richmond.
In the lobby of the Oval, visitors will be able to watch a three-channel audio-video piece that explores the histories in both an abstract and lyrical manner. Visitors will also be able to check-out interactive mobile devices which contain animated Story Cycles using video, audio, film and photography. These units use GPS hot-spots to activate location specific content – so that as the viewer nears a hot-spot an audio/visual segment of the Story Cycle will unfold.
Deanne Achong is an artist working in Vancouver. Her practice explores photographic and digital media in installations and net art, with a brief foray into robotics, following a residency at the Western Front. Faith Moosang’s work, while largely based in photography, has also included installations using video and film. She is also a curator, researcher of and writer about photography. This is the first time that Achong and Moosang have collaborated artistically.
