Bike to Work, School May 11 to 15 to Save, and Win

May 4, 2009

Commuters will see a lot more cyclists of all ages on the roadways, next week (May 11 to 15) for the third annual Bike to Work (& School) Week, a regional initiative to promote commuter cycling. Cycling to work and school saves dollars and improves air quality, in addition to promoting good health.

And this year, when you log your daily commutes online you are automatically entered into the Bike-a-Day Give-a-way. The group is giving away five bikes, one a day.

More than 400 Richmond cyclists registered in 2008, up from 200 in 2007. This year the City of Richmond is hoping for at least 500 participants. To encourage newcomers, three commuter stations will be established along Richmond’s various cycling routes. They’ll offer free food and beverages, free coffee at the morning stations, free bike mechanics, cycling maps and information, and prize draws.

The commuter stations will be located at:

  • Richmond City Hall: southeast corner adjacent to Granville Avenue and No. 3 Road on Tuesday, May 12 from 6:30 to 9 a.m.
  • Thompson Community Centre: southeast corner adjacent to Granville Avenue and Lynas Lane on Thursday, May 14 from 4 to 6:30 p.m.
  • No. 6 Road and Westminster Hwy: southeast corner on Friday, May 15 from 6:30 to 9 a.m.

To encourage commuter cycling, the City has 40 kms of designated on-street bike routes, some with designated bike-only lanes, and bike racks at all civic facilities. A map and more information on cycling in the city is available online at www.richmond.ca/services/ttp/cycling/local.htm.
