Celebrate Asian Heritage Month in Richmond
28 April 2009In Richmond and across the country, the Government of Canada has designated the month of May as Asian Heritage Month. Together, the City and the City’s community partners are celebrating Pan-Asian arts and culture and exploring Asian heritage and traditions.
During Asian Heritage Month, residents and visitors to Richmond are welcome to take part in the following featured activities happening across Richmond:
Gateway Theatre presents: Train by Maiko Bae Yamamoto
A playful story about curious connections, Train is the story of three people brought together by a strange connection in a place where lives and possibilities intersect.
Asian Heritage Fair
Date: April 30 – May 9, 2009 Location: Gateway Theatre Studio B, 6500 Gilbert Road Admission: $22 – $26, online at www.gatewaytheatre.com or through the Gateway Box Office at 604-270-1812. Details: Suitable for ages 12+
Richmond Chinese Community Society, with support from the City of Richmond, presents a showcase of Asian heritage, arts and culture and community information stalls.
Third Annual Drumming Extravaganza

Experience traditional Asian drumming ranging from South Asian Dhol drumming through to Japanese Taiko and much more.
Writers Workshop

Renowned Canadian author Jen Sookfong Lee presents a workshop to inspire new authors. If you are involved in writing work that draws from family history or uses biographical information, this workshop is for you. Please reserve a place in advance.
Like Light Off Water

Order of Canada poet Daphne Marlatt reads passages from her work, Steveston, with music performed and composed by Robert Minden and Carla Hallett. This verbal and musical exploration of Steveston and the Fraser River also explores the history and experiences of the village’s Japanese-Canadian community.
New Asia Film Festival

Celebrate Asian film and Asian filmmakers with the best in contemporary Asian Cinema. Co-produced by the City of Richmond, Cultural Centre, and Cinevolution Media Arts Society. Visit your local Richmond Starbucks or the Cultural Centre to pick up a festival program.
