Airplane Crash Under Investigation
July 10, 2009...updatedThe investigation into an airplane accident that occurred in Richmond last night is ongoing.
Shortly after 10 p.m. on July 9, a twin-engine Piper Navajo struck the ground behind a building in the 12500 block of Vickers Way in Richmond. Richmond RCMP, Fire-Rescue and Emergency Health Services responded to the scene. Richmond RCMP is working in partnership with the Transportation Safety Board on the investigation.
The RCMP have confirmed two fatalities, both adult males. No names are being released until notification of next-of-kin. There were no persons injured on the ground.
The airplane was a chartered flight, inbound from Victoria, delivering blood for Canadian Blood Services. It crashed on final approach to Vancouver International Airport. The scene does not pose any danger to the neighbourhood and all roads in the area are open, including Vickers Way. However, some traffic lights are not working and hydro power is in and out in several blocks. To avoid traffic congestion, police are asking the public to avoid the area unless essential. Some businesses impacted by the accident remain closed.
