Walk and Walking Guide Book in Chinese
13 July 2009
Join Cantonese- and Mandarin-speaking leaders on a special Walk Richmond event Friday, July 17. Part of the City Centre Celebrates in the Park in Garden City Park, the half-hour walk starts at 7 p.m.
A Chinese version of the Richmond Walking Guide Book is also now available, made possible by a grant from the British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. This 24-page guide showcases 19 local walks as well as gives readers some instruction on the benefits of walking and proper stretching techniques. Both English and Chinese versions of the guide can be found at www.richmond.ca/walk.
Walk Richmond is one of the city’s free, drop-in recreational programs. In partnership with the Richmond Fitness and Wellness Association, the City of Richmond offers weekly walks led by instructors that allow you to exercise, explore different neighbourhoods and trails, and develop a new network of friends and fellow walkers. Walks are always led by trained instructors who provide advice and assistance if required and offer three distance and speed options to accommodate all walking levels.
“The benefits that people derive are much greater than the obvious health benefits of increased physical activity levels,” said Dylan Chipperfield, fitness coordinator for the Richmond Fitness and Wellness Association. “People meet new friends, new walking partners, they take part in specialized workshops around resistance training or nutrition, and they learn about other programs such as the RCMP Walk and Watch program or the Canadian Mental Health Bounce Back program. Participants also have the opportunity to be trained as Walk Leader’s themselves.”
