Richmond Olympic Oval Continues to Win Recognition

27 November 2009

The Richmond Olympic Oval continues to collect awards for its design, construction and integration of sustainable building practices.

The most recent recognition comes from The Canadian Institute of Steel Construction, which presented the Oval with the BC 2009 Steel Design Award of Excellence in the Engineering category November 19.

“It’s always an honor to receive these tributes to the Oval,” said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “Aside from the prestige and recognition for which we are very grateful, the awards help the City achieve our vision for the Oval – to be an iconic landmark and a showcase for sustainable building practices.”

The annual awards are presented to steel structures that showcase efficient use of steel in unique applications, in the categories of architecture, engineering and sustainability. Formed in 1930, the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction is a national non-profit organization representing the structural steel, open web steel joist and steel platework fabricating industries.

The award comes on the heels of the gold award from the international Institution of Structural Engineers 2009 Structural Awards. Other awards won by the Oval include the Innovation in Architecture Award of Excellence from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, the Institutional Design Award from the BC Wood WORKS/Canadian Wood Council, Green Building Practices Award from the Globe Foundation and World Green Building Council, and a Sustainability Star from the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC).
