Richmond Urges Residents to Participate in Renewing City Vision to The Year 2041

23 November 2009

The City of Richmond is asking community members to share their vision for the future of their City as it prepares to update its current Official Community Plan. This major update to the plan will enable the City, its residents and business community to better understand and manage social, environmental and economic changes up to the year 2041.

“My Sustainable Community is the powerful theme we’ve adopted for this update,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “It will embed the three pillars of sustainability – environment, social and economic – into each aspect of the plan. We must look for new strategies to ensure these systems are healthy for future generations.”

Evening and Saturday public open houses are being held around Richmond from November 24 to December 7. The City asks all residents to complete an easy survey, offered in both English and Chinese. It is available online and at the open houses.

This comprehensive update process has now begun and will take over a year to complete. Many questions such as, how many residents will Richmond have and where will they live; where will industry and jobs be located; and how will we maintain the high quality of our recreation facilities for an increased population, will be addressed.

The updated plan will be closely tied to our current fundamental objectives, which include protection and productive land use within the Agricultural Land Reserve; placing the majority of growth in our City Centre; protection of single-family neighbourhoods; and promotion of quality improvements - such as housing choices, transit options and urban design guidelines.

“The foundation for this major update will be the public input gathered from the survey and the open houses,” said Brodie. “This is your city. Your investment of just a few minutes will have you engaged in the important duty of making Richmond a better place for many years to come. We want to hear from you.”
