Background
Metro Vancouver is committed to the most sustainable waste management solution we can possibly achieve.

We retained a leading consultant to examine a whole range of alternative options for managing waste we either cannot or do not yet recycle.

To enrich that work we had arguably the leading consulting economist in the province examine the financial issues and our professional renowned air quality staff looked at the ambient air quality aspect.

When the conclusion seemed to indicate that both waste to energy and landfills would be needed, but with an emphasis on shifting from landfills to waste to energy, we looked at the counter arguments. On health impacts, we sought the opinion of a leading toxicologist, emeritus professor and Chair of the European Economic Union Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks. On the impacts on sensitive valley airsheds and the relationship to recycling commitments, we asked the opinion of a leading European expert who is both an experienced project manager and the Chair of the International Solid Waste Working Group on Hazardous Waste.

We had four Metro Vancouver elected officials, members of committees charged with the responsibility to provide advice to the Metro Vancouver Board on this matter, travel to Sweden, a country which has embraced waste to energy approaches in the context of an international reputation for a commitment to sustainability, to check things out for themselves.

We think their observations could inform the discussion. Your participation will enrich that discussion and give us insight as to what moves informed public opinion.
