Explore City’s Culture, Heritage at Doors Open, May 2 & 3
17 April 2009Residents and visitors will be able to explore Richmond’s unique arts, culture and heritage for free during the second annual Doors Open Richmond, a unique two-day event on Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3.
Among the 40 sites featured are places of worship, green spaces, art galleries, private collections, artist’s studios, museum and heritage sites and a community police station. With sites located throughout Richmond, visitors can plan their route based on geography, special interest or just their curiosity.
“Last year’s launch of Doors Open Richmond was very successful and we are excited to again open the doors of a wide variety of diverse community and heritage sites for not only Richmond residents, but visitors throughout the Lower Mainland,” says Connie Baxter, Supervisor, Richmond Museum and Heritage Sites. “This is now an established annual event with plans to add subsequent sites in future years.”
Coinciding with Doors Open is the official opening of the “How We Lived” exhibit at the Britannia Shipyard, National Historic Site on May 2 at 10 a.m. The new exhibit reveals the captivating stories and cultural diversity of the Shipyard between 1910 and 1930.
“Indoor and outdoor exhibits allow the visitor to experience the everyday activities, lifestyles and personal relationships that took place during this 20-year span,” explained Bryan Klassen, Britannia Site Supervisor. “The entire community is invited to this very special opening.”
While the majority of the Doors Open Richmond sites will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3, visitors are encouraged to check the map listing for times of operation. Doors Open site maps, which list all participating sites, are available at the Richmond Cultural Centre at 7700 Minoru Gate, all City of Richmond facilities and online at www.richmond.ca/doorsopen.
There is no cost for sites or visitors to participate.
