2009 BC Seniors Games a ‘Warm Up’ For Volunteers

13 July 2009

If you want to volunteer for the Games, but don’t want to stand around in the cold in February, why not step up for the BC Senior Games, to be held from September 16 to 19, in Richmond.

Like the other “Games” in February 2010, these are a celebration of athletic achievement and camaraderie. However, the games held during balmy days of September are strictly for those over 55 years old, to promote a healthy, active, senior lifestyle. To date, over 600 volunteers have registered to help out, with another 600 volunteers needed at the various Richmond venues.

“We’re looking for volunteers of all ages who can contribute four or more hours of time during the four days of the games, as well as volunteers who can help us now in the lead up to the games,” said Jim Lamond, president of the 2009 Richmond BC Seniors Games Society. “There are many volunteer opportunities, such as delivering lunches to the venue hosts or serving food at the outdoor dinner buffet, traffic control at parking lots and helping set up and run the competitions in designated sports.”

The BC Seniors Games features 29 sport and recreational events and over 4,000 participants, making it the largest sporting event in Richmond to date. Venues include The Richmond Olympic Oval, Minoru Park fields and track, Soccer Centre at Hugh Boyd Park, Watermania and most community centres.

The games are organized by the 2009 Richmond BC Seniors Games Host Society, with support and assistance from the BC Senior Games Society, the BC Games Society and the City of Richmond. The games encourage BC’s seniors to keep active and stay socially involved. Although competition is an important part of the games, and can be fierce, active participation by seniors in sport, recreation, and culture is the real purpose behind the annual gathering.
