Richmond’s Youth Volunteers Kick Up Their Heels at Appreciation Dinner
22 August 2008To honour over 100 of Richmond’s finest youth volunteers, an appreciation dinner was held at Richmond City Hall on August 21 to recognize their thousands of volunteer hours. These spirited and passionate youth, some as young as 14 years old, have worked hard to ensure another successful year of City of Richmond’s Summer Programs.
“Each year, hundreds of children participate in Richmond Summer Programs,” said Linda Brooks, Summer Integration Coordinator. “Whether it’s Day Camps or cultural programs, these programs and services simply could not be offered and provided if it wasn’t for these dedicated youth volunteers. These youth selflessly give their time to ensure that Richmond Summer Programs may continue to operate and we are so appreciative.”
This year’s celebration was a fun Western theme and everyone got into the swing of things when Richmond’s seniors taught the youth volunteers line dancing.
Youth volunteers work alongside City of Richmond staff, giving children the chance to experience fun, friendship and unique activities along with the development of social and leadership skills.
Children with varying abilities, such as those with Asperger’s Syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and behavioural challenges, may be given extra support resulting in mutual understanding and cooperative opportunities for all children.
