Adapted Fitness Program Expands at Thompson Community Centre

October 28, 2008

Two grants fund new equipment and training sessions

Two grants for equipment and training sessions means even more fitness programs are offered for people with disabilities and rehabilitation needs at Thompson Community Centre.

The centre began offering the Adapted Fitness Program in April last year, which enabled individuals with physical limitations to integrate into community programs and to use a variety of equipment to experience a full-body work out. Later that year, a donation from the Rick Hansen Foundation made possible the purchase of a Sci-fit machine, used extensively in the program. The Sci-fit machine allows for easy access with a removable seat, the option of exercising legs, arms or both, employs an easy, push motion rather than a cycle movement and offers soft foot holders for better comfort. A second donation earlier this year from the Milan Ilich Foundation enabled Thompson Community Centre staff to double the number of weekly training sessions offered.

A wide variety of equipment for a full-body workout is housed in the Thompson Community Centre’s 4,000 square foot gym, which has aisles wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs. An Active/Passive Trainer and Recumbent Stepper works legs and arms, with or without assistance, which helps prevent complications to muscles and joints that result from long-term restriction of movement.  In addition, a walking bar, free weights, cable machines and much more are available so that a person with disabilities or rehabilitation needs will be able to train major muscle groups using a variety of tools in the fitness centre.  Forty-five minute sessions are offered throughout the week and certified trainers are available to answer questions, set up a specific exercise program and help guide persons through a training session.

Registration is required at least 48 hours in advance.  For more information, call 604-718-8422 or visit www.richmond.ca/thompson.  The Thompson Community Centre is located at 5151 Granville Avenue.
