King George, Minoru fields reopen with synthetic turf

September 22, 2008

Richmond’s sports enthusiasts will have two more top-quality fields to enjoy, with the installation of synthetic turf in King George Park and Minoru Park now complete.

And everyone is invited to test it out during two separate opening celebrations. The King George Park celebration is this Saturday (Sept. 27, 2008) at 4100 No. 5 Road from 2 to 4 p.m. and will feature sport demonstrations, skill development activity stations, and a ceremonial ball kick-off.  More than 10,000 organized sports users access King George Park for its high-quality, lighted sports fields.

The following Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, the Minoru Park field opens, with a ribbon cutting ceremony, sport skills demonstrations and development activities, and a soccer game by the Richmond City United U-14 Selects, who are representing BC and Richmond at the Canadian youth soccer championships in P.E.I. on Thanksgiving weekend. The Minoru Park field was constructed inside the existing oval running track and will accommodate full-sized soccer or Canadian football matches.

The synthetic turf fields provide a top-rate playing surface that not only improves playing conditions for all field sport groups, but also will release approximately 50 existing playing fields in residential neighbourhoods for more passive park uses.

About Synthetic Turf
Synthetic turf replicates a natural grass surface, but offers improved durability and cost benefits. The sand and rubber infill system, patented technology by FieldTurf, provides a safe alternative, resulting in a documented reduction of sports injuries. More information at fieldturf.com.
