Celebration of Sport Featured at Richmond Winter Festival

A celebration of sport, from playground to podium, highlighted by a rare local chance to skate outdoors, will be part of the interactive free family fun at the Richmond Winter Festival.

Free public skating will be offered on Big Chill skating rink, presented by Lehigh Northwest Cement Ltd. on the plaza of Richmond City Hall. Bring your own skates and enjoy the true Canadian winter experience of skating outdoors or watch winter sports demonstrations by local ice sport groups, including Richmond Minor Hockey Association, Connaught figure skating club, Seafair Hockey Association , Richmond Ringette Association, Richmond Sockeyes junior hockey team, Richmond Rockets speed skating club and Richmond Girls Ice Hockey.
Enjoy the thrill of victory at the Richmond Oval Pavilion. Meet national long track speed skating team member and Olympian Brock Miron. Get an autograph from other past and future Olympians and Paralympians sponsored by RBC. Meet the Vancouver 2010 Olympic mascots (Friday only) and stock up on Olympic gear from Hbc. Look like a champion by getting your picture taken in a replica Olympic bobsleigh.
Get into the swing of things at the Sports and Action Tent. Swing at a softball, shoot at a basketball hoop or learn about Sport Dance. There’s loads of ways to have fun and get active. Participating sports and community groups include Richmond Girls Softball Association, Richmond Youth Soccer, Richmond Girls Soccer, Abreast In A Boat, BC Seniors Games, Walter Wu Scholarship Endowment Fund, Richmond City Baseball, Richmond Boys Fastball, Richmond Kajaks Track and Field Club and BC Wheelchair Sports and Wheelchair Curlers. The Vancouver Whitecaps will also be on hand to inspire budding athletes.
After you’ve tested your body, test your mind at the Brain Games, a 30-board simultaneous competition featuring Chess, Xiang Qi (Chinese Chess) and Go. See if you can beat the master as he takes on all comers for 13 hours.
Other festival highlights include:
- Two stages with continuous live entertainment, including the main stage, sponsored by CTV and BC Lotteries, featuring headline performers David Usher and The Sojourners featuring Jim Byrnes, and the Coffee Cultures Stage, sponsored by YVR, with performers from around the corner and around the world.
- CTV News broadcasting live on site on Friday, February 8.
- Fireworks Friday and Saturday presented by Richmond Centre
- Art Park and Fantasy Parade, featuring face painting, hat and mask making, musical instrument construction and costume fittings, followed by a parade procession.
