One Day Speed Skating Course Offered to Community

Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to learn about speed skating and how you can become involved as an official or volunteer at upcoming events.

A Speed Skating clinic is being held on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at Richmond City Hall and will be facilitated by Ted Houghton, Executive Director of BC Speed Skating, and Level 5 Official.

“A variety of Speed Skating events will be occurring in BC, in Richmond and at the Richmond Oval leading up to the 2010 Olympic Games,” said Sue Spencer, President of the BC Speed Skating Association. “All these events require many volunteers and we’re thrilled to offer this introductory course to get people interested in this fabulous sport.”

“Come and find out what Speed Skating is all about, and talk to some of the BC Speed Skating Association officials, skaters and volunteers.”
Date: Saturday, March 29, 2008
Time: 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Location: Richmond City Hall, 6911 No. 3 Road
Registration Fee: $10, payable by cash or cheque on March 29 before the course begins
Participants will receive:
  • A general overview of Speed Skating
  • Details about how the racing occurs
  • Information on the various roles of officials
  • Insight on what it takes to put on world class events
  • Details about how the general public can get involved as volunteers
  • Information about the Richmond Oval and the events that will be held there

As a special feature, Magnus Enfeldt from VANOC and the Richmond Organizing Committee Speed Skating will be presenting video footage of different competition components from the recent World Speed Skating Championships in Nagano, Japan.

The course is hosted by the Richmond Rockets Speed Skating Club and the Richmond Organizing Committee Speed Skating.

About the Richmond Rockets Speed Skating Club
Richmond Rockets is a registered club of the British Columbia Speed Skating Association. Its mission is to promote speed skating to skaters of all ages and skill levels, by providing a safe, fun, sportsmanlike and competitive environment. From its inception in 2005, it has grown to 45 members and more continue to join.

About the Richmond Organizing Committee Speed Skating (ROCSS)
ROCSS is comprised of interested community members and speed skating volunteers. Its mandate is to facilitate the successful production of speed skating events held in the Richmond Oval. The committee is currently looking for volunteers with experience in event planning, media relations, security, sport marketing and administration to round out the team.
