Water Main Upgrades in Richmond
25 January 2008For residents in Richmond who notice cloudy water when they turn on the tap, the elevated turbidity levels are due to the shutdown of the 42” Shaughnessy water main by Metro Vancouver.
Although not aesthetically pleasing, cloudy water does not pose an immediate health risk and the water is still safe to drink for most healthy individuals. Individuals with suppressed immune system related medical conditions should take extra precautions such as boiling their water or considering an alternate drinking water source, such as bottled water.
Metro Vancouver is doing some densification work in Richmond near the Oak Street bridge as part of a seismic upgrade. The Shaughnessy water main will be shut down until the upgrade is completed.
The City of Richmond’s Water Services Division does not anticipate any major loss of pressure or flow within the system due to this shut down as demands are close to their lowest during this time of the year. However, because of flow reversals within the system, there may be some unavoidable issues related to high turbidity.
Residents with concerns should contact the City's Public Works Dispatcher at 604-270-8721.
