Olympic Torch Showcased at the Steveston Salmon Festival

27 June 2008

Get your picture taken with an Olympic torch when the City of Richmond and the Richmond Spirit of BC committee celebrate Canada Day at the 63rd Annual Steveston Salmon Festival.
Date: Tuesday, July 1, 2008
Time: 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Location: Steveston Salmon Festival
Come out to our Richmond Oval/Richmond Spirit of BC information booth. Participants can get a snapshot of themselves holding an Olympic torch from the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games. There will also be free giveaways for those who drop by. City staff and community volunteers will be on hand to talk about the project’s progress and answer questions about Richmond’s role as a Venue City for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Construction of the Richmond Oval passed another milestone with the pouring of concrete for the venue’s 400-metre speed skating track. The next major milestone will be making the first ice in the building, which is scheduled for August. The first skaters will begin testing the ice in September.

The Oval will be home to the long track speed skating competition for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. It remains on budget and on schedule to open later this year and will begin hosting major speed skating competitions in December, beginning with the Canadian national championships. Come learn about the remarkable progress being made on one of the largest construction sites in Richmond’s history.

The Steveston Salmon Festival will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2008. Since 1945, Steveston residents have shown their Canadian pride and celebrated the country’s birthday by throwing a great party. Thanks to the tireless efforts of hundreds of volunteers and the generous support of sponsors, the Steveston Community Society organizes one of the largest non-profit Canada Day celebrations across the country, with over 75,000 people joining in on the festivities.
