Rock Out at the Richmond Winter Festival

29 January 2008

More than 20 hours of free music and live performances on two stages, ranging from chart-toppers like David Usher to the cross cultural sounds of Delhi 2 Dublin, will rock the 2nd annual Richmond Winter Festival on Friday, February 8 and Saturday, February 9,  2008.

Friday night’s line-up features a headline performance by Canadian singer-songwriter and former Moist front man David Usher. Currently recording a new album, David Usher has sold over 1.3 million records with his band and as a solo artist. He has won five Junos including the 2002 Pop Album of the Year and has had 10 different Canadian # 1 radio singles. Also performing on Friday night at the festival are the African drum-dance combo N’Nato Camara, Beatles tribute band Twist and Shout, urban dance group Fresh Groove and popular Richmond singer-songwriter Cherelle Jardine.

Saturday’s Winter Festival main stage performances are headlined by The Sojourners featuring Jim Byrnes. Three of Vancouver’s most talented vocalists form The Sojourners, who take their inspiration from gospel, soul and blues and will be performing with legendary local bluesman Jim Byrnes in a unique fusion of musical styles that is not to be missed.

Other feature performers Saturday include: Five Alarm Funk, a Vancouver-based, 12-piece rhythm fuelled by original funk and afro-beat grooves; Delhi 2 Dublin, who blend the instruments and music of North India and Ireland with electronic and acoustic, mainstream and underground; and The Higgins, two sisters and a brother, who blend country music, rock and pop into sweet-sounding family harmonies. Rounding out the mainstage line-up will be performances by the Richmond Chorus and the White Spot Pipe Band.

Meanwhile, look for a cultural melange of music from around the world and around the corner on the Coffee Cultures Stage, sponsored by YVR.  On Friday night, it’s a French-Canadian flavour as the City Centre Community Association presents Le Carnaval, its annual celebration of French-Canadian culture in our community. On Saturday, watch for an eclectic mix of urban dance, and modern and traditional sounds from a variety of cultures.
