Richmond Olympians Shine in Beijing

22 August 2008

Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie has congratulated Richmond’s Canadian Olympic team members on their outstanding performances at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Summer Games.

“We are extremely proud of all our Olympians and their accomplishments,” said Brodie. “They are outstanding role models for our community and our nation. It was particularly thrilling to have Kyle Hamilton, one of our own Richmond Olympians, capture gold in Beijing.”

Richmond’s seven Canadian Olympic team members include:
  • Kyle Hamilton, captain of the Canadian men’s eight rowing team, which captured the Gold Medal;
  • Brian Johns, who finished seventh in the men’s 400-metre individual medley in swimming and was part of the fifth place Canadian team in the men’s 4 x 200 metre freestyle final;
  • Darcy Marquardt, member of the Canadian women’s eight rowing team, which narrowly missed a medal finishing fourth in the final;
  • Jodi-Ann Robinson, member of the Canadian women’s soccer team, which was eliminated in the quarter finals;
  • Samantha Taylor, member of the Canadian equestrian eventing team, which placed ninth overall;
  • Jimmy Van Ostrand, member of the Canadian men’s baseball team, which finished fifth overall in the round robin; and
  • Mo Zhang, who won her preliminary match in women’s table tennis before being eliminated in the next round.

“The extraordinary achievements and commitment to excellence of all the Olympic competitors is especially exciting to watch as we prepare to host the speed skating competition for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games right here in Richmond,” said Brodie. “We look forward to celebrating the performances of athletes from around the world in 2010 and to the thrill of hearing O Canada played as our Canadian athletes reach the top of the podium as they have in Beijing.”

The Richmond Oval, which will open later this year, will host 12 speed skating medal events, during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
