Community Input Sought for a New Richmond Museum
25 September 2008As part of the Museum Feasibility Study, the City of Richmond is seeking public input about a new, dynamic Richmond Museum. The public is invited to attend an open house to review information, which showcases two new museum options, and provide feedback.
The City is looking to create a museum where cultural, museum and heritage activities of the past and present can be supported and celebrated into the future. In the development of the Richmond Museum and Heritage Strategy, the public has expressed a desire for a museum that would serve as a cultural anchor for the community, as well as a tourist destination.

Stakeholders and City staff have now developed two museum options to share with the broader community and are looking forward to receiving public input.
The Museum Feasibility Study outlines current cultural trends, the Richmond story, and what a new museum could look like. Both of the options could act as a hub for all of Richmond’s museum and heritage sites, the largest number open to the public within any municipality in metro Vancouver.
“I believe that Richmond's bold vision for the future requires a point of reference,” says Jack Wong, Chair of the Richmond Museum Society. “A new museum will continue to educate, inform, direct, and inspire residents and visitors to understand Richmond's heritage and culture, and how this community has been built by choice and by natural circumstances.”
The Museum Feasibility Study suggests a new museum could help achieve its vision by linking its culturally diverse community and contributing substantially to the local economy by enhancing Richmond’s appeal as a cultural destination.
Using input from the public gained at the open house, the vision for a museum will be revised and a final report created for City Council’s review in the fall 2008.
