Richmond Celebrates World Move For Health Day

05 May 2008

This week, the City of Richmond is encouraging residents to lace up their shoes and go for a walk with two events planned to get people moving for World Move For Health Day.

“The physical activity level of our residents has earned Richmond the title of Healthiest City in Canada,” says Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “We know physical fitness is important to our residents and we hope they’ll take part in the World Move For Health Day activities we have planned.”

On Wednesday, May 7 Richmond will be looking for bragging rights as the most active city in BC when it hosts the Heron Strut as part of World Move For Health Day. This annual event has municipalities across the province compete against each other to see who can get the most walkers out.

City of Richmond staff will meet in the City Hall plaza at 12:10 p.m. to begin the walk around Minoru Park, where they will meet up staff from Richmond Health Services.

The Walk Richmond kick-off event will be held on Saturday, May 10 starting a 10 a.m. at Garry Point Park in Steveston. This is the first free walk in the 2008 monthly walking series. The kick-off will include a Steveston heritage adventure walking tour, tips on shoes and apparel from Track and Trail Runners as well as the chance to win a prize. Walk Richmond is an initiative aimed at building a legacy of healthy lifestyles in Richmond by engaging people in life-long walking.

On World Move For Health Day, which is Saturday, May 10, all BC residents are encouraged to get active. The day is part of the Canadian Medical Association and Province of British Columbia’s challenge to British Columbians to increase their physical activity levels by 20 per cent by 2010.
