Metro Vancouver Invites Input on the Future of the Region
09 June 2008Transportation and growth. Energy and climate change. Drugs and crime.
These are some of the interconnected issues that Metro Vancouver will consider during five regional discussion forums this June. Priorities identified at regional meetings will set the stage for the first ever Future of the Region Sustainability Summit later this fall, when emerging areas of consensus and specific goals for achieving a sustainable region will be identified.
Since 2006, Metro Vancouver has hosted Future of the Region Sustainability Dialogues and Sustainability Community Breakfasts. Experts and highly–engaged participants have provided fresh and stimulating perspectives on regional issues, generating a wealth of information that will help guide decision-makers.
“The Discussion Forums and Sustainability Summit are the next step on our road to a sustainable future,” said Metro Vancouver Board Chair Lois Jackson. “Metro Vancouver’s recently adopted Sustainability Framework is the foundation upon which specific goals and actions identified through the summit process will be built.”
Metro Vancouver has organized this month’s discussion forums into three streams of subjects so participants have the opportunity to contribute to one stream right through to the Sustainability Summit in October. Background documents, drawing on a wide-range of materials and resources to provide context and detail on these and other issues, are located at www.metrovancouver.org/region/summits/Pages/default.aspx.
Participants are encouraged to review these documents prior to the forum.
The three streams:
- Stream 1: Transportation and growth, the economy, governance and finance.
- Stream 2: Drugs and crime, culture and learning, housing.
- Stream 3: Waste, energy and climate change, ecological health.
Registration is required as space at the forums is limited. Participants are asked to prioritize the discussions in which they wish to participate. Register by visiting the Metro Vancouver website at www.metrovancouver.org.
