“The book gives children a chance to fully experience something they only see parts of in everyday life,” says Debbie Tobin, Director and Founder of the BC Children’s Art and Literacy Centre. “This project and the book launch has generated a lot of attention and support from the community. The kids have had so much fun and it has really been a labour of love for all of us.”
Approximately 5,000 children participated in the development of Max Newhouse's book. Newhouse will read his book at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and give guided story walks through the original art he created for the book with the help of elementary students in Richmond. There will be free drop-in art and drama classes for children from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and drama presentations at noon and 2:30 p.m. All elementary aged children are invited to attend.
During the past year, more than 700 children have participated in drama activities and 300 children in puppet making activities organized by the British Columbia Children's Art and Literacy Centre. The centre is currently seeking a permanent home for its programs.
The mission of the British Columbia Children's Art and Literacy Centre is to lead, develop, house and promote programs that engage British Columbia children, youth and adults in the enjoyment of art for its own sake and as a means of enhancing literacy and learning.
