Richmond’s Pre-eminent Urban Design to be Recognized with Lulu Awards

09 Semptember 2008

Have you ever wondered what it is about a particular city location that makes you feel it’s attractive, memorable and safe? You can likely thank excellent urban design.

And this is why the City of Richmond is proud to announce the inaugural year of the Lulu Awards – a bi-annual urban design awards program.

“The Lulu Awards are intended to recognize, celebrate and inspire excellence in urban design in the City of Richmond,” says Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “The awards program will recognize the City’s best examples of architecture, urban design and landscape architecture created over the past three years.”

An impressive judging panel has been assembled, including independent judges such as internationally renowned, award-winning architect James Cheng; former president of the Canadian Institute of Planners and well-known urban planner, Jay Wollenberg; and acclaimed landscape architect and visionary Don Vaughan.

"Over the years, I have been watching Richmond evolve from a car oriented suburb toward a vibrant downtown with a transit focus,” said James Cheng. “I am very happy to be part of the process that will recognize good urban design."

Call for submissions begins now until October 15, 2008. The judges will make their decisions in December 2008 and the awards reception will be held in Richmond in February 2009.
