Cyclists Invited to Join in Eighth Annual Island Tour
28 May 2008To mark the end of Bike to Work Week and June being Bike Month, the eighth annual Island City, by Bike Tour will be held in Richmond this Sunday, June 1.
“There are a number of great biking routes for cyclists to explore in Richmond,” says Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “The bike tour gives cyclists two options to get out and discover our scenic island.”
This year’s annual cycling awareness event will feature long (20 km) and short (9 km) rides, both of which will start and finish at Sea Island School (southeast corner of Templeton Street and Miller Road) on Sea Island.
Participants can choose which group to ride with, and are encouraged to enjoy a slow-paced, scenic ride with the whole family. The short route will travel out to McDonald Beach and back while the longer route will head out to Iona Island and return via Grauer Road and Russ Baker Way.
This event is a fun, family-oriented opportunity for the community to become familiar with Richmond’s extensive on- and off-street cycling network, and is an opportunity to realize the benefits of cycling as a viable means of transportation on the road to healthy, active living.
Come out at 9:30 a.m. if you would like a pre-ride bike and helmet safety check; otherwise the rides depart at 11:00 a.m. (long ride) and 11:30 a.m. (short ride).
The groups will reconvene at Sea Island School to enjoy refreshments and a raffle prize draw. Tour leaders will be conducting the rides, so all participants need to bring, other than your bike, is their helmet and a sense of humour (or adventure) in the off-chance that it rains.
