Richmond Takes a Lead in Move for Health Day
27 May 2008Richmond reinforced its bragging rights as the most active city in BC when a record breaking 33 per cent of the total available City employees participated in a local government challenge walk on Move For Health Day. This annual event has municipalities across BC compete against each other to see who can get the most walkers out.
The brisk walk, which took place on May 7, was led by Mayor Malcolm Brodie. Employees from all departments took part in the walk and Richmond Health Services staff joined City staff to support the cause.
“Surpassing our participation goal and being recognized as having the highest number of walkers is a well-deserved honour for us,” says Mayor Brodie. “Over and over, Richmond is being recognized as a healthy, physically active city. It is very rewarding to have our employees recognized in this same light.”
The City of Richmond is currently involved in other outdoor physical activities such as Bike to Work Week and Walk Richmond, a monthly walking series aimed at building a legacy of healthy lifestyles in Richmond by engaging people in life-long walking.
Next year’s World Move For Health Day will be on May 10. All BC residents are encouraged to get active. The day is part of the Canadian Medical Association and Province of British Columbia’s challenge to British Columbians to increase their physical activity levels by 20 per cent by 2010.
