Awards Celebrate Richmond’s Green Thumbs
15 August 2008
Garden enthusiasts are invited to attend the City of Richmond’s 2008 Landscape and Garden Awards Gala at the Gateway Theatre to celebrate the achievements of the many winners of this year’s Landscape and Garden Contest.
The Gala, being held on Thursday, August 21 from 7 – 9 p.m., will present awards to the winners, followed by an exciting multi-media presentation by keynote speaker Brian Minter, an award-winning horticulturalist, entrepreneur, broadcaster, author and environmental activist.
Minter’s presentation, The Future and Sustainability of Gardening, will explore the changing nature of gardening in a world of diminishing resources and rising food and energy costs. His knowledge and passion for gardening and the natural world have made Minter a “must-see” speaker in high demand across the country.
This year’s Landscape and Garden contest featured over 90 entries in three categories - residential, commercial/institutional, and earthwise. Images of Richmond’s most beautiful gardens will be presented in a captivating slide show set to music.
Tickets for the Awards Gala are free and are now available on a first come first serve basis. For more information or to book tickets, please contact the City of Richmond’s Parks Division at 604-233-3325.
About the keynote speaker
Born in New Westminster, BC, Brian Minter began sharing his passion for plants with BC's gardeners when he and his wife Faye purchased Country Garden Store, a garden shop that had been part of Chilliwack’s community since 1957. By 1980, that passion for plants was transformed into the 32-acre, world-famous Minter Gardens.
Minter, a University of British Columbia graduate (BA) and master gardener, quickly became BC's go-to garden expert through his experience at both the garden centre and the display gardens. As such, he has hosted countless radio and television shows, is a frequent gardening columnist, and is the author of the Canadian Best Seller, Brian Minter's New Gardening Guide - Fresh Approaches for Canadian Gardeners. He is the President of Minter Gardens, and the President and General Manager of Country Garden Store
