A New Way to Play at Garden City Park
10 June 2008What does a planting maze, reflexology path and crow’s nest have in common? They are all parts of the new Garden City Play Environment officially opening at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 14 at Garden City Community Park (between Garden City Road and Granville Avenue).
“City staff envisioned this playground to present some of our most beautiful local natural elements along with traditional play pieces to provide a unique unstructured outdoor experience,” explains Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “The goal is to inspire creativity and promote imaginative play - all while providing children and adults with a rich opportunity for physical activity and social gathering.”
This extraordinary innovative play environment is believed to be the first of its kind in North America. Children can sit or climb over old growth stumps and logs, go up and down hillside slides and net climbers, explore the meandering stream with edges that change from formal pavers to banks of sand, rocks and vegetation or catch air in the skateboarding feature.
Richmond school children were instrumental in the development of this play area. They were consulted in the design process and described their visions in drawings, sketches, words and clay models. Local landscape architecture firm, Space2Place assisted with the design of the playground.
Celebrate the official opening and immerse yourself in this natural play world.
Enjoy the ribbon cutting, along with fun entertaining music, arts, crafts, activities and games.
