Free film series at Richmond Cultural Centre hints at what’s to come in 2nd annual New Asia Film Festival

September 22, 2008

Richmond, BC - A new film series, launching at the Richmond Cultural Centre Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, will showcase contemporary Asian documentaries as a tantalizing lead up to the second annual New Asia Film Festival next May.

Films will be screened the fourth Saturday of each month at the Cultural Centre and offer free admission. Two documentaries kick off the series on September 27 starting at 7 p.m. with Way of Fortune, an in-depth, provocative look at China’s new prosperity. This 2007 documentary directed by Chang Chao Wei is in Mandarin with English subtitles.

Shanghai Quest, a film that follows three Americans as they bump and grind their way to the top in Shanghai, will follow at 8:30 p.m. Directed by Kim Taylor, and in Mandarin and English with subtitles, this film provides an open view of contemporary urban China and Shanghai’s lifestyle revolution since the economic reform of 1992.

The rest of the series line-up will be announced shortly. The series will also feature, on occasion, visiting filmmakers who will talk about their work.

The series builds on the success of the first New Asia Film Festival, held last May. Founded by the Cinevolution Media Arts Society and the Richmond Cultural Centre, the annual film festival featured 27 new films over the four days, focusing on contemporary, often controversial themes found in Asian cultures from around the world. Most of the films have rarely been screened in Canada prior to the festival. The 2009 film festival is scheduled for May 8 to 10.
