Free Fireworks Light Up Halloween

October 23, 2008

It’s the spooky season, and Richmond families are reminded to celebrate safely at one of the six professional firework displays staged throughout the City.

The City of Richmond Halloween Fireworks Festival is back at Minoru Park (7191 Granville Avenue) on Friday, Oct. 31. Festivities start at 6:30 p.m. with costumed performers and fire dancers, setting the stage for a fireworks extravaganza at 8:15 p.m.

As well, five Community Fireworks Displays, sponsored by local community associations, will take place at the following locations and times:

Five Community Fireworks Displays are scheduled:

  • West Richmond Community Centre, 9180 No. 1 Road, 7:45 – 8:30 p.m.
  • South Arm Community Centre, 8880 Williams Road, 8:15 – 8:45 p.m.
  • Sea Island (Burkeville Park), 1060 Catalina Crescent, 7:45 – 8:15 p.m.
  • Hamilton (McLean Park), 22500 McLean Avenue, 8:00 – 8:30 p.m.
  • Cambie Community Centre, 12800 Cambie Road, 7:45 – 8:15 p.m.

To increase community safety in Richmond, Fireworks Regulation Bylaw 7917 was enacted to prohibit the sale, purchase, possession or ignition of fireworks of any kind at any time, except by special permit. Since the fireworks bylaw came into effect in 2005, Richmond Fire-Rescue has seen a dramatic decrease in the number of fires on Halloween. Permits will not be issued to the public for backyard, cul-de-sac, or other similar displays and persons found to be selling, igniting or in possession of fireworks are subject to the fines of $1,000 under the bylaw.
