Next up for New Asia Film Series: Love

October 16, 2008

Love is the theme in the next two screenings of the New Asia film series to be held at the Richmond Cultural Centre Saturday, Oct. 25 starting at 7 p.m.

Films are being screened on the fourth Saturday of each month at Cultural Centre, leading up to the second annual New Asia Film Festival in May 2009. The October line-up starts at 7 p.m. with Lovers’ Lover, a lively story that acutely depicts the mentality of today’s Hong Kong young generation. This award-winning short directed by Heiward Mak is in Cantonese with English subtitles.

The Shoe Fairy, a light-hearted love story with a charming dose of fairy tale, follows at 7:30 p.m. The Shoe Fairy is a debut feature from one of Taiwan’s hottest new directors, Yun-Chan Lee. It’s in Mandarin and English with subtitles.

The series builds on the success of the first New Asia Film Festival, held last May. Founded by the Cinevolution Media Arts Society and the Richmond Cultural Centre, the annual film festival featured 27 new films over the four days, focusing on contemporary, often controversial themes found in Asian cultures from around the world. Most of the films have rarely been screened in Canada prior to the festival. The 2009 film festival is scheduled for May 8 to 10.
