City Tests Alternative Lighting System

12 May 2008

As part of the City of Richmond’s commitment to creating a more sustainable community, staff are testing an alternative lighting system which uses local renewable energy and reduces emissions of greenhouse gases. The wind turbine and solar powered lighting system will be installed May 14 and the trial will begin the week of May 19, running for a few months.

“The pilot project of the hybrid power system, combined with low energy lights, will test the viability of using this system more broadly in Richmond,” explains Robert Gonzalez, General Manager of Engineering and Public Works. “If found to be successful, the City will explore opportunities for using the lighting system in select locations in the community.”

The trial is being done in combination with Innovative Air Solutions. The Innoair 600PV technology involves the use of a 600 watt wind turbine and a 80 watt solar photovoltaic panel. These devices store energy from the wind and sun to a battery pack that powers the light from dusk to dawn.

One 10 metre pole will be erected in Garry Point Park in Steveston.
