Earth Week Celebrations at Terra Nova Rural Park

23 April 2008

Join Terra Nova Park’s Earth Day celebrations this Saturday
An estimated one billion people around the world are expected to participate in celebrations, events, and programs this week promoting environmental protection in celebration of Earth Day. A number of Earth Day activities have been held in Richmond, with activities concluding on Saturday at the Terra Nova Earth Day Celebration from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“Earth Day is a great opportunity to not only educate the public about the environment, but also get them involved in making a difference,” explains Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “On Saturday we will be planting 25 trees and 1,000 shrubs along the edges of the newly constructed slough, with help from community and corporate volunteers.”

A number of community groups will take part in the celebration as volunteers, including members of the Thompson Community Association as well as employees and family members of major corporations such as Honda, FedEx, and Starbucks. Tree Canada has raised $15,000 from BC Hydro, YVR, and FedEx to purchase materials for this special Earth Day planting.

The day’s activities, which are part of Doors Open Richmond, will focus around the planting of the slough beginning at 10 a.m. and will move to the demonstration garden area at 12 p.m. for speeches, exhibits, and entertainment.

As parking is limited, residents are asked to walk, bike, or carpool to the event. The Richmond Community Cycling Committee has linked up with the Steveston Community Centre and West Richmond Community Centre to offer free biking trips to the event, following a route along the dyke. Terra Nova Rural Park is located at 2431 Westminster Highway.

The event is presented by the City of Richmond in partnership with the Terra Nova Schoolyard Society, Richmond Fruit Tree Sharing Project, and Tree Canada. For more information contact the City of Richmond Parks Division at 604-244-1250 or visit www.richmond.ca/begreen.
