Reel ‘em in at the Annual Bullhead Derby
19 June 2008Come out and cast your lures and kick off the 63rd Annual Steveston Salmon Festival on Sunday, June 22 with the yearly Bullhead Derby hosted by the Richmond Golden Rods and Reels Society.
“This is a fun, popular family event with lots of prizes to be won, including awards for the smallest, biggest and ugliest bullhead,” explains Janice Froese, Administrator of the Steveston Salmon Festival. “However, everyone is a winner when the community comes together to participate in this event, which launches the historic July 1 festival.”
Pack your lawn chairs, fishing rods and tackle and head out to Garry Point Park in the southwest corner of Steveston, at 7th Avenue and Chatham Street. The Bullhead Derby has two categories: children 12-years-old and under and seniors 65-years-old and over. Everyone is invited to come and cheer on the fishers.
“Its really neat to watch little kids learn to tie bait and cast a fishing rod with their parents or grandparents, many for the first time,” says Froese.
Adults are encouraged to help young ones set up their gear and coach them along, but the fishing has to be done by the children.
There is no fee to participate in the Bullhead Derby. Registration starts at 9 a.m. and the derby runs from 10 a.m. until noon. Prizes will be awarded at 1 p.m.
