Richmond’s First Senior Wellness Circuit – At Hugh Boyd Park
16 December 2008In early 2009, Hugh Boyd Park will be the home of the first senior’s fitness circuit in Richmond. Seniors will have a convenient, free, outdoor fitness circuit designed to provide them with a workout to improve flexibility, balance, strength, and endurance. Thanks to the West Richmond Community Association, funding provided through the ActNow BC initiative and the City of Richmond.
“This senior’s fitness circuit supports the vision that Council adopted in the Older Adults Service Plan,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie at the December 15 sign unveiling at Hugh Boyd Park which celebrated the ActNow BC funding. “Our goal is to focus on engaging and valuing older adults, and providing opportunities to enrich their health and wellness. This is important to maintaining and promoting a healthy community.”
The circuit will include 14 exercise stations, and while it has been designed for seniors in the community, all ages will be able to enjoy the equipment while benefiting from using it. Each piece of equipment will be simple to operate and instruction signs will accompany each so that maximum benefits can be reached. Orientation classes and fitness programs will be offered by the West Richmond Community Association, who initiated this project as part of the overall Hugh Boyd Park Master Plan Update.
"This park furthers our government's Throne Speech commitment to put in place ActNow BC Seniors Community Parks throughout the province," said John Yap, MLA for Richmond-Steveston. "Seniors will be able to exercise and be physically active, for fitness and fun, right here in West Richmond".
The senior’s circuit is being constructed close to the children's play area, soccer fields and golf course. This will promote intergenerational use of the park, making it great place for people of all ages to meet and socialize.
The City is preparing the physical base for the circuit and the ActNow BC Grant is intended to be for the purchase of the fitness equipment and the surfacing.
