Business License Infractions Taken Seriously in Richmond

05 February 2008

At a special meeting on Monday, February 4, 2008, Richmond City Council cancelled one business license and suspended a second business license due to serious infractions.

“Council has sent a clear message that businesses not complying with the terms of their business license will be held accountable,” explains Amarjeet Rattan, Richmond’s Chief License Inspector. “With over 11,500 active business licenses in Richmond, we have a number of upstanding business owners who abide by the terms of their business license. However, there are always some businesses looking to step outside of these boundaries, and we want them to know their actions will not be tolerated.”

The business license of Dream Garden Supplies, located at 11579 Bridgeport Road, was cancelled after an inspection of the premises by Richmond RCMP in August 2007 located marijuana clone plants, bags of loose marijuana and the remnants of apparent grow op room. The business was also operating without a valid business license and a number of building code deficiencies were discovered.

Council issued a seven day business license suspension, effective February 7 to 13, 2008, for WD Recycling Ltd., located at Unit 130 – 1566 Eburne Road. WD Recycling Ltd., known as “We do recycling,” was found to have purchased scrap metal items offsite its business premises, which is in contradiction to the Scrap Metal Dealer, Second Hand Dealer and Pawnbroker Regulations. The business was also found to have been operating outside of permitted hours; failed to tag individual scrap metal items purchased; and failed to maintain its proper name and address on both sides a vehicle used in connection with the business.

City staff continually monitor and enforce municipal bylaws throughout the year.
