Telus Pitches in to Help the Environment at Terra Nova

30 May 2008

The City of Richmond’s Terra Nova Rural Park will undergo some spring cleaning with the help of Telus employees. On Saturday, May 31, over 200 Telus volunteers will be in Terra Nova equipped with shovels, spades, hammers and loppers.

“The involvement of Telus volunteers is a great example of how our corporate community works with the City of Richmond throughout the year in a number of green initiatives,” says Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

Helping both the community and the environment, the 200 Telus volunteers will be putting some elbow grease into the following five activities:
  • planting crops for the Richmond Fruit Tree Sharing Project, which grows food for the food bank
  • building raised garden beds for the Terra Nova Schoolyard Society, which teaches children about the food cycle and how to grow food
  • cutting back and removing invasive blackberry plants, which hinders native plant life and poses a challenge to the park’s biodiversity
  • cleaning up the shoreline between the West Dyke Trail and the Middle Arm Dyke Trail, which are two of Richmond’s most heavily used walking and jogging facilities
  • planting shrubs around the Terra Nova Slough, which will serve as an important habitat for wildlife

Terra Nova Rural Park
Terra Nova Rural Park is located at 2431 Westminster Highway (West end of Westminster Highway, west of No. 1 Road). It is an unique place for everyone to experience Richmond’s natural and cultural landscape, which balances heritage, wildlife conservation and recreational uses.

The park features a community garden and farm where park volunteers grow and harvest organic fruit and vegetables for the local food bank. The volunteers also run school programs to give children hands-on gardening experience and teach them about food security while providing them the opportunity to grow food from seed to harvest.
